When War Comes Home

When her Navy SEAL husband returned from Iraq with only a broken leg, Marshele Carter Waddell praised God that he was home safe and sound. In the months that followed his homecoming, she began to sense that his leg was the least of their concerns.

Although he was recovering physically, his soul still walked with a limp. His unseen wounds, caused by war zone experiences, went unmentioned, unnoticed and untreated. These invisible injuries slowly, but surely, infected her marriage, children and family life.

“He was home with us in body, but, in his spirit a war still raged.... His ability to be a loving husband and father suffered greatly. From irritability and irrationality to nightmares and emotional numbing, it became very clear to me that my veteran husband was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).”

Special price for active duty military and spouses is $15 (USD). Cover price is $23.99. This is available for a pre-order, at the special price, in our store. Just click the link below.

Spreading the words: Raffo, Strathairn and Eisenberg.

On August 13, as part of the U.S. Marine Corps' annual Combat/Operational Stress Conference, 300 people gathered in a ballroom at the San Diego Hyatt Hotel to hear David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck), Jessie Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale), Iraqi-American actress Heather Raffo and translator-director Bryan Doerries (subbing for Bill Camp) read from Doerries' translations of Sophocles' Ajax and Philoctetes, plays that are now nearly 2,500 years old.

On August 13, 2008, four actors presented a dramatic reading of scenes from two ancient Greek plays by Sophocles that timelessly depicted the physical and psychological wounds inflicted by war upon individual soldiers. The performance featured David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck, The Bourne Ultimatum), Jessie Eisenberg (The Squid and the Whale), Heather Raffo (a well-respected New York actress), and Bill Camp (a Broadway actor).

The reading was followed by a panel discussion with Marshele; Capt. William P. Nash, former Operational Stress Control Coordinator for the Marines; Lt. Col. Jay Kopelman (author of the bestselling memoir “From Baghdad to America: Life Lessons from a Dog Named Lava”).

Kudos to Bryan Doerries (director), the actors, the other panel members, and those who attended. It was a “magical” night which will not be forgotten.

Faith Deployed:
Daily Encouragement for Military Wives
Coming January 2009, Moody Publishers

Faith Deployed, coming January 2009

Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives (in bookstores January 2009) is a companion to military wives the world over, co-written by Marshele and 14 other military wives from each branch of service. It is not “ten easy steps” for a painless life; instead, it is a collection of devotions that squarely addresses the challenges unique to those whose husbands serve our country.

How does the Christian military wife maintain a strong sense of patriotism without allowing her country to become an idol? What good can possibly come from moving every two to three years? How can I be sure that God has a purpose for my life that is just as strong as His purpose for my husband's?

Faith Deployed explores all these questions and more. The foundation of this book is the unchanging character of God and the anchor Jesus Christ, even amidst the shifting circumstances of a military family.

Bagpipes Cryin'

11 November 2006

On June 28, 2005, during a battle in the mountains of Afghanistan, an MH-47 helicopter was shot down and 19 special forces troops and airmen were killed, including 11 SEALs. Marshele's husband, Commander Mark Waddell, was acting commander of East Coast SEAL operations at the time.

Mark wrote a poem to commemorate the loss. Now, Nashville duo Rushlow Harris have released a new single, based on this poem, and produced by Toby Keith, titled "Bagpipes Cryin'." It is gaining airplay on many country radio stations around the country.
